Why was Nehru the chosen political heir of Mahatma Gandhi?
Gandhi ji chose Jawaharlal Nehru as the congress President in 1946, which positioned Nehru to become India's first Prime Minister, despite Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel having the overwhelming support of the provincial Congress committee votes. Nehru got no votes from provincial Congress committees but Gandhi ji vetoed this election result and selected Nehru as heir of congress party and to lead the independent nation when it gains independence. Some people call it Gandhi ji’s selection while some people call it first ‘vote ch0ri’ of Indian democracy.
The important point is why Gandhi ji made this decision. Sardar Patel was a strong administrator but priority was given for Nehru who is considered as ‘internationalist’. Hence priority was given towards international relations more than domestic issues. Gandhi jip revered a ‘British slave’ in the form of Nehru. Gandhi ji was right as Nehru’s reputation remained as ‘last British to rule India’ or ‘black (kale) Englishman’ even decades after his death.
After independence, Mountbatten’s influence was retained in Indian policy making process. This was the critical time when India faced tribal invader’s inroads in Kashmir. Nehru was misguided by Mountbatten while home minister Sardar Patel took the decisive step and ask PM Nehru bluntly if he want Kashmir or let it go. When Nehru said he wants Kashmir, he asked all officials including military officers present in that meeting to consider Nehru’s wish as go ahead for military action. Clearly, Mountbatten was retained in India to serve British and Pakistani interests. For more than a decade after independence, India mostly purchased weapons of British origin. It was only in early 1960s when India started purchasing Soviet Union (now Russia) origin weapons.
Many decades later daughter of Lord Mountbatten, Pamela Mountbatten clarified about the romantic relationship between her mother Edwina Mountbatten and PM Nehru before and after independence of India. As per Pamela Mountbatten (Hicks after marriage), they were strongly attached (read deep love) but never had physical relations (both were too old to have physical relation). This was perhaps a British plan where Lord Mountbatten ignored his wife’s close and special friendship with Nehru who will be the PM of a big country. This way Britain controlled India’s policy making. Hence Nehru’s policy decisions were pro-British and pro-Pakistani.
Nehru under influence of Edwina Mountbatten took decisions based on heart and not mind (brain)
Thus, Gandhi ji’s decision to have a pro-British (read slave) PM as internationalist Nehru actually backfired and harmed India. The country is still bleeding from Nehru’s blunders, six decades after his death. This is the reason Nehru is discussed so much in social media.
