Can we say Jawaharlal Nehru was a politician and not a freedom fighter? His sacrifices are not even an iota of those made by freedom fighters like Bhagat Singh, Azad?
Some people may think that Gandhiji, Nehru and congress party’s role regarding independence was a big propaganda as history books are always written by victorious side. The darker side of this congress party dominated independence struggle history books given a feeling that non-congress freedom fighters were completely side-lined in the history books. The worst case is how PM Nehru treated the non-congress freedom fighters and their family during his 16 years PM tenure.
The great freedom fighter Bhagat Singh’s family lived in obscurity after independence in Punjab before Bollywood film star Manoj Kumar made a biopic movie ‘Shaheed’ on Bhagat Singh where he played the lead role. Manoj Kumar claimed that Bhagat Singh’s family did not want any money or royalty but a sincere thanks from the nation for martyrs like Shaheed e Azam Bhagat Singh.
It was Manoj Kumar who brought a sick Vidhyavati - Bhagat Singh’s mother to Delhi where she met PM Lal Bahadur Shastri. Her other son Sardar Kultar Singh also accompanied her. PM Shastri was shocked to see their living conditions and ordered immediate financial help to the family.
Many decades later more Bhagat Singh biopic was made with lead actors Ajay Devgan, Bobby Deol and Sonu Sood. Congress party regularly did free screening of Manoj Kumar’s patriotic films like Upkaar, Purab aur Paschim at urban mohollas and villages especially before 15 August Independence Day till 1980s in the Hindi belt. With these free film screening, congress tried to promote the propaganda that only congress party and Gandhiji brought independence.
The tragic part is, Nehru was PM for 16 years after independence and he ignored freedom fighter Bhagat Singh’s family. The Bollywood film star Manoj Kumar who did mostly patriotic films and got the nickname ‘Bharat’ Kumar. These films helped congress party politically but congress failed to reward this humble film star. Manoj Kumar received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's highest cinema honor, in 2015 by Modi government. That time his age was 78.
This is another example to prove than congress only awards ‘chamchas’ and not the patriots. This trend started by Nehru and followed by all congress dynasts. The only exception was LB Shastri and PV Narsimha Rao. Perhaps this is the reason that these two congress ex-PM are not glorified by congress chamchas.
