How important is Suvendu Adhikari in West Bengal politics?

Multiple school children have fallen ill or died in Bihar and other Indian states over the years under free mid-day meal scheme due to stale food related food-poisoning, poor quality foods by government contractors for cost cutting, contaminated food etc. served under the government's free lunch program. The most severe tragedy occurred in July 2013, when 23 children died in the Saran district after eating a meal laced with toxic pesticide. The reason for toxic pesticide was due to the food container was previously used to mix pesticide to be sprayed on agro plants but they forgot to clean the vessel. Next day, school children’s mid-day meal was cooked on that toxic vessel. Bengal under Mamata Banerjee / TMC era also saw scams related mid-day meal. Mamata Banerjee and TMC politicians always used to take cut-money from all sources including central funded schemes.

Considering these issues, Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari has taken a positive step of providing school mid-day mean for students by a religious NGO ISKON instead of standard government contractor. This was announced immediately after the assembly election win. This decision was not taken positively by the non-veg loving Bong people. Opposition TMC claimed that egg protein will go missing from the student’s nutrition plan. In response to this, ISKON said that soya chunks contain more protein.

Why ISKON as mid-day meal supplier can be a game-changer? ISKON serves millions of hygienic foods everyday across India and abroad. Similarly, Sikh Gurdwaras serve daily foods from thousands of shrines but they never serve stale foods. There are no reported bad instances regarding Sikh Gurudwara and ISKON food quality. So, there are some advantages of using religious NGOs for school mid-day meals than corrupt and greedy government contractors. This is a new experiment and one can expect safe and healthier food for school kids.
