Is Mr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee a household name in West Bengal now?
As BJP government is formed in Bengal in May 2026, the people of Bengal should remember the contribution of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in education, freedom movement and state formation, not just the fact that he formed Jana Sangh which ultimately became political party BJP.
On 20 June 1947, the 58 people who voted for the formation of West Bengal in the Bengal Legislative Assembly were all Hindus. And those 21 who voted for Pakistan that day were from the Muslim community. On June 20, 1947, the Bengali Legislative Council met to determine the future of Bengal Province where it was proposed to form a united Bengal between India or Pakistan or divided into East Bengal and West Bengal respectively as a home for Bengali Muslims and Bengali Hindus. In the initial joint session, the council decided by 120-90 that if Bengal joined the new Constituent Assembly of Pakistan, it would remain united or undivided. Later, a separate meeting of West Bengal legislators decided by a vote of 58–21 that the province should be bifurcated and West Bengal should join the existing Constituent Assembly of India. Another separate meeting of East Bengal legislators decided by a vote of 106-35 that the province should not be divided and that East Bengal would join Pakistan in case of partition by 107-34. On July 6, 1947, the Sylhet referendum decided to separate Sylhet from Assam and merge it into East Bengal. Most Hindus abstained from this voting due to laziness and Sylhet district of Assam moved out and became part of East Pakistan and subsequently Bangladesh. According to the June 3 Plan or Mountbatten Plan, the newly divided Bengal province was transferred to Pakistan and India on August 14 and 15, 1947 respectively. East Pakistan, which was later a province of Pakistan, emerged as an independent and sovereign nation, Bangladesh, in 1971 through the war.
If we don't have this West Bengal today, our condition would be just like the Hindus of Pakistan or Bangladesh. In Pakistan, Bangladesh, there is no secular accumulation, communism bully. Both are Islamic countries, Pakistan is almost Hindu-free and in Bangladesh Hindus are second class citizens, declining steadily and are subjected to brutal humiliation and torture every moment.
Mukherjee saw the pain of minority Hindu refugees in their own state of Bengal and extreme senseless jeh@di violence before the actual partition, he concluded that Hindus need a separate homeland
Now understand how TMC CM Mamata Banerjee tried to make West Bengal to West Bangladesh, an extension of Islamist Bangladesh. She changed state government logo to ‘Biswa Bangla’ which she claimed that she designed it and she is getting royalty payment from state government for using it. The problem with Biswa Bangla state logo is that it does not represent the national emblem of ‘Four Lions’. As soon as BJP government came in May 2026 they replaced the Biswa Bangla logo with National Emblem.
Mamata Banerjee also replaced ‘West Bengal Day’ from 20 June every year to Bengali calendar new-year called ‘Poila Boishakh’ (Baisakhi in Hindi/Punjabi). TMC tried to push Bengali sub-national identity in every respect, close association with Bangladesh, blaming and disrespecting North-Indian (read all non-Bengali people living in Bengal) all the time, just for vote bank politics. Mamata Banerjee and many regional politicians like her are threat to national integration. Replacing West Bengal Day from 20 June to Bengali new-year day should be considered anti-national act as most ‘state day’ are celebrated on its formation day. Karnataka Day for example, is celebrated on 1st November every year as it was formed on this day in 1956.
The leftist, communist, naxalite and librandµ intellectual bhadrakoks of Bengal will slowly and reluctantly understand why they need a prolong BJP government in the state
