Why does Rahul Gandhi have such a hard time connecting with voters, despite his long political career and famous family background?
In 1919 congress leader Gandhi ji hoped to get Muslims support for the congress by supporting the Khilafat Movement. The Khilafat Movement was nothing to do with Indian issues or independence movement. It was mainly Muslims of south Asia protested against the British due to the fall of Ottoman Empire after WW-1. Congress hoped that with this support, congress will gain Muslim support and move away their support for the Muslim League. Muslim League always promoted the narrative that congress is a Hindu dominated party and they are the sole representatives of Muslims in South Asia.
As Muslim League became Muslim only party, congress promoted secularism and has many Muslim leaders in their top ranking. These top congress Muslim leaders like Maulana Azad and others pushed congress to support Khilafat Movement. That was the start of Muslim appeasement policy by the congress. This is the time when a congress leader Dr. Keshav Hedgewar left congress and created RSS in 1925. He vowed to defeat congress with help of RSS even if it takes 100 years to achieve it. RSS achieved it it 21st century and all this is because of congress’ Muslim appeasement policy started by Gandhi ji. Congress side lined and truncated Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s ‘Vande Mataram’ song considering Muslim sensitivities. The Muslim appeasement policy of congress continue to grow before and after independence.
Still congress and Gandhi ji failed to prevent the bloody partition. Gandhi ji continued to claim that partition will happen only over his dead body till the last moment. When he realised that he has no power to prevent the partition, he move to Calcutta (now Kolkata) to stop communal riots. Almost 90% Muslim leaders who demanded Pakistan homeland stayed back in India and Nehru government encouraged them to join congress party. Many of them became part of his government, constitution drafting member and got other senior government posts.
Congress failed to realise that 80% Hindu religious majority population are also citizens of India and taken them for granted. Since then it has been nearly 80 years and congress appeasement policy for a particular community only gained strength over the time. The recent killing of an Iranian leader and Gaza war again exposed congress’s pro-Mulsim vote bank appeasement policies. All top congress leaders like Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka CM etc. criticised USA/Israel action regarding killing of an Iranian fundamentalist religious leader. By supporting global Islamist leaders congress is solidifying its Muslim vote bank. Digvijay Singh said ‘Osama ji’ to honour al-Qaeda terr0rist who destroyed the New York twin tower and shared stage with controversial Islamist preacher Zakir Naik. There are many more recent examples.
This is the biggest problem with the congress. It has become the 21st century Muslim League of India. This is the reason congress leaders had to search for a safe seat in Kerala as they are losing their traditional bases in north India completely. All hopes of congress now lies in Kerala and Lakshadweep (98% peaceful community population). A rat enters into a trap after seeing the food but failed to realise that it is a trap. When the mouse realises it, it was too late.
This is the condition of congress today. Its popularity, vote base, the number of MPs and state MLAs are declining. Their continuing support for Palestine and now the Islamist Iranian religious leader again proved that congress only cares for its core vote bank and not the national interests. Since the death of Iranian leader on the first day of Iran-USA/Israel war in March 2026, congress leaders are criticising Indian government that they are silent on this death. Immediately large section of peaceful community hit the street in J&K, Lucknow, Hyderabad etc. protesting against death of Iranian leader. This way congress becomes closer to a particular community but move away from the political mainstream.

Five days after Iran leader’s death, India condoles Khamenei death but not condemned it. Clearly, Modi government balances national interest with diplomacy and ignores certain community vote bank politics as they generally don’t support BJP.
