Sonam Wangchuk was arrested under NSA in September 2025, two days after violent clashes between protesters and security forces left four civilians dead and over 90 injured in Leh. The Union Home Ministry has directly blamed Wangchuk, a prominent member of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), for allegedly provoking unrest during the agitation demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. He had been on a fortnight-long hunger strike before the violence started. Violence erupted during a bandh call. Wangchuk denied instigating the crowds, condemning the violence and insisting the movement was peaceful. The 24 September 2025 bandh spiralled out of control when a large group of youth marched towards the BJP office in Leh, vandalising property and clashing with police.
