Can the Indian Railways use solar power by either placing panels on trains or in unused areas around the tracks?
This is deployment of solar panels right on the tracks in Switzerland.
Deployment of solar power near Indian Railway tracks land which belong to the railways, on rail coach roofs, railway building and stations are nothing new. These initiatives are going for many years. Now Indian Railway has deployed a prototype of 15 kWp solar panels on the railway tracks. This test need to pass the oscillation and vibration tests as micro-cracks on solar panel glass may reduce its efficiency. There are other issues which is typical to Indian scenario – theft and damage to the public property which is not properly guarded. Hence, large scale deployment of solar power in rail tracks may have its limitations. But if this pilot project succeeds, this can be implemented across the Indian cities metro rail elevated sections where access is highly restricted and also Namo Bharat rapid transit trains (like Delhi-Meerut) which may come up in future.
The current Modi government working on various solar project related schemes and has ambitious plan of 500 GW renewable power generation target in India for year 2030 from 201 GW recorded in September 2024.
