Why can not India end the Indus Water Treaty?
Modi government ended Nehru’s one of the Kashmir related blunder by abrogating Artice 370 and 35A in 2019. Not just Indian congress leaders but Pakistani leaders opposed this move. This gives idea who were benefiting from a special constitutional provision regarding J&K. The next is suspension of Indus Water Treaty (IWT) in 2025.
The Modi government has plans to connect the Indus river with the Ravi-Beas rivers by diverting the water to the Harike Barrage in Punjab through Sutlej river. The mega canal will be around 200 km long, and involves constructing as many as 12 large tunnels. Water running through these these tunnels will flow into the Indira Gandhi Canal, and a few others, including the Ganga Canal in Rajasthan, ultimately flowing into the Yamuna River.
As per media reports, the expansion of the plan involves connecting these river streams to the Yamuna, and work is underway to increase the capacity of the Ganga Canal, remove silt and stop leakage along with Sirhind Feeder in Punjab, Rajasthan Feeder in Haryana and Indira Gandhi Canal.
The project, expected to be completed within three years (highly unlikely), will benefit states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan. Facing growing domestic pressure amid a looming water crisis, Pakistani leaders have urged PM Shehbaz Sharif to defuse the “water bomb.” In recent statements, Sharif has expressed willingness to hold peace talks. Apparently, Pakistan approached Italy’s Giorgia Meloni to broker peace between the two South Asian countries. In what way Giorgia Meloni can influence PM Modi remains to be seen. It looks like Pakistani leaders follow social media stories related to MELODI. It seems India is firm – only verifiable action against terrorism can revive the dialogue or the treaty.
Nehru’s generosity by gifting more waters to Pakistan only caused pain to India
PM Modi has silently rectified another blunder of PM Modi. In June 2025, Unified Waqf anagement, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) portal has been launched introduced by the government to digitise the registration of Waqf trusts. The portal is part of the changes proposed in Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, to digitise and modernise Waqf administration, bring transparency and prevent illegal land grabs. Waqt properties are Muslim religious endowments for charity. The government said the changes in the law will protect and manage Waqf properties for society’s benefit while ensuring a proper administration system to make Waqf management more transparent, responsible, and inclusive.
Waqf Board was created by Nehru because he was surrounded by Islamists
It may take another 100 years to rectify all blunders of Nehru
