Is China's economic strategy changing amid rising global pressure?

As USA President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff war starts across the global from 2nd April 2025, the stock market across the world is in state of flux. China should be more worried as it is purely export oriented economy. China again behaved like a chameleon and started making sweet talks with India. Chinese leader and Indian President Droupadi Murmu exchanged congratulatory messages on April 1, 2025 to mark the 75th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two countries. The Chinese leader said, China and India should work more closely together, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Indian President Droupadi Murmu, describing their relationship as a “Dragon-Elephant tango,” a dance between their emblematic animals. Mr. Xi said the neighbours should find ways to coexist peacefully and that he was ready to deepen communication and coordination in major international affairs, and jointly safeguard peace in border areas.

It was indeed sweet talk as China faced USA tariffs and need alternate big markets do dump their exports. China deliberately maintains a huge trade deficit with India as they consider India a potential rival in Asia. Despite many commitments from Chinese leadership in last 20 years at various levels, the huge trade deficit was allowed with various tariff and non-tariff barriers by Chinese customs and rules. Commerce Minister Suresh Prabhu during Modi 1.0 government tried its best to increase Indian exports to China. He even roped in Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and made him brand ambassador of India in China. That time Aamir Khan’s many films were highly successful in China and he was a celebrity in China. Modi government planned to use his celebrity status to promote Indian products in China. But unfortunately, all the initiatives failed. China will simple import from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but not from India. This is part of their strategy.

The crude weapon used by the PLA soldiers in Galwan 2020 clash

Successive Indian governments failed to realise this Chinese strategy. Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru said in 1960s that ‘he got nothing but lies and deception from the Chinese leadership’ after the 1962 war. Chinese policy remains the same and they will target India whenever they feel India is weak. China made abusive comments during 70 day Doklam standoff at Bhutan-India-Tibet tri-junction in 2017, made aggressive military posturing in Galwan in 2020 by violating all bilateral protocols, publish faulty Indian map and never considers Indian’s territorial integrity at certain locations, ignores India objection for CPEC with passes through part of J&K, issues staple visa for certain region of India, make unsuccessful infra investments in unviable projects around India to promote ‘string of pearl’ gunboat diplomacy. But when threatened by the Trump tariffs, they say, China and India should work more closely together, describe their relationship as a “Dragon-Elephant tango,” a dance between their emblematic animals, neighbours should find ways to coexist peacefully and that he was ready to deepen communication and coordination in major international affairs, and jointly safeguard peace in border areas. All bullshit.

The cobra and China can never be trusted. Remember ‘Hindi Chini bhai-bhai’ slogan of 1950s? The Chinese leader just delivered an April fool diplomatic message on 1 April 2025.
