What role did Jawaharlal Nehru play in the degradation of India?
Good news for Karnataka tourism. Belur, Halebeedu and Somnathpura are on the world tourism map. The temple architectures are best in the world. This was declared by UNESCO on 18 September 2023. I have visited these temples in 1990s and they are truly world class. It is unfortunate that this site got UNESCO World Heritage tag this year – after 75 year of Indian independence. If you look at Indian list of UNESCO World Heritage site listing, major Mughal architectures and monuments were listed early. Indian PM Modi welcomed this news with pride.
It is important to note that first PM Nehru glorified Mughal monuments like Taj Mahal and disliked south Indian Hindu temples (ancient Hindu temples in North India hardly exists after brutal 800 year Islam!c rule). Nehru has no problem in attending Ifftar party (religious) but warned his ministers and colleagues not to attend re-construction of Somnath temple in Gujarat.
The deep-seated hatred that Nehru harboured towards Hindu religion is apparent in his March 1959 speech at the seminar on architecture organized by New Delhi’s Lalit Kala Academy. Speaking on that occasion PM Jawaharlal Nehru held that he found temples oppressive while adding that the Taj Mahal was a delight to the eye and spirit.
His speech goes thus:
‘Mr. Chairman and friends, I have come here for a brief while this morning just to wish those people attending this seminar and specially our younger architects, success in their talks here, meaning thereby a new fermentation taking place in the minds of this generation leading to more suitable types of architecture which fit in with conditions today and yet are things of beauty.
Mr. Humayun Kabir (then cultural affairs minister) referred to the great temples of the South and the Taj Mahal. Well, they are beautiful. Some of the temples of the South, however, repel me in spite of their beauty. I just can’t stand them. Why? I do not know. I cannot explain that, but they are oppressive, they suppress my spirit. They do not allow me to rise, they keep me down. The dark corridors—I like the sun and air and not dark corridors.
However, architecture today can hardly be thought of, well, broadly speaking, in terms of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is, of course, one of the most beautiful things anywhere and it is a delight to the eye and to the spirit to see it. It represented, as all architecture represents to a large extent, the age in which it grew. You cannot isolate architecture from the age, from the social conditions, from the thinking, from the objectives and ideals of that particular age…’
No wonder many of the buildings built under the Nehru regime bear a distinct stamp of his Hindu hatred and love for Mughal architecture. These include the Ashok Hotel, Vigyan Bhavan, Krishi, and Udyog Bhavans, and National Museum. It is, therefore, hardly surprising that many post-independence era buildings are totally devoid of Hindu architectural features.
Congress party till today follows Nehru’s legacy of anti-Hindu politics. They now have support of DMK and jeh@di parties whom congress now calls secular.
They oppose Indian government award to Gita Press, Gorakhpur.
They oppose naming Chandrayaan-3 landing spot ‘Shiv Shakti’ but named Chandrayaan-1 touch point ‘Jawahar Point’.
Opposed placing a Tamil Hindu royal symbol of Sengol at new Parliament building by calling the event as unnecessary distraction. The Sengol they kept in museum for decades.
Opposed Ayodhya temple construction and questioned existence of Lord Rama in Supreme Court.
They along with DMK tried to damage ‘Ram Setu’ or Adam’s Bridge in TN. Luckily, Subramanian Swamy with the help of Supreme Court got that plan shelved.
Made numerous laws in the constitution (the list is long) to box Hindus in India and appeased Abrahamic religious minority in the name of secularism.
