Why are Olympic wrestlers protesting at Jantar Mantar?

Olympic wrestlers are continuing their protest against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Singh who happens to be a BJP politician. As time passes, more sportsmen are joining the protest. Without going into blame game, two disturbing things needs to be discussed.

Why politicians are heading a sports body? Anurag Tahkur, Arun Jeitly, Jay Shah (son of Amit Shah) once held powerful positions in cash rich cricket board BCCI. Around 50% of sports bodies are under politicians. So, politicians always fight to take control of sports bodies under some pretext or other. When congress ruled the country in first 50 years, they managed the sports bodies and now it is BJPs turn. Many eminent sports people objected presence of politicians in sports body but their voice was always supressed. One must look into the basic fact that 1.35 billion Indian population hardly produce any Olympic gold medals while similar population in China produces 30-40 Olympic gold medals every time. Then we feel something is wrong with our sports.

Since WFI chief is a politician, opposition leaders jumping into the wrestler’s mat. Congress leader Priyanka Vadra, Bhoopendra Hooda and Udit raj visited. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal supported the protesting wrestlers along with his cabinet members Saurabh Bhardwaj and Atishi Marlina. Kejriwal is under fire for a Rs 45 Crore house renovation which seems to have violated certain approval norms. Kejriwal is now trying to deflect the pressure by supporting protesting wrestlers. Kejriwal’s AAP party was formed in 2012 with NGOs and ‘dharna-jivi’ or agitationists. All of them can join this protest as all dharna-jivi just needs some agitations to participate.

Are we expecting other dharna-jivi to join this protest? Why not, this is India. Almost all opposition politicians and NGO dharna-jivi will join if the agitations continue for long.

Just like Anna Hazare’s ‘India Against Corruption’ agitation was high jacked by vested interest andolan-jivi, there is concern that wrestlers protest will bring dharna specialist from all across the country who have a vulture mind-set and finally, wrestlers issue will be forgotten.

So, it is better if the agitation is resolved at the earliest.
