How is Rahul Gandhi regarded in Uttar Pradesh, and will he be able to sway votes in the upcoming assembly elections?

First let’s look at Delhi University annual election to select the student leadership in 2026. Year after year DUSU (Delhi University Students Union) elections were won by BJP youth wing ABVP while congress youth wing NSUI fail to make any inroads. This is just one indication that congress is no longer an opposition party in vast areas of North India. Delhi congress has failed to win a single assembly seat in 70 member state assembly since 2015. AAP is primary rival of BJP in Delhi and congress is in a hopeless situation.

Congress currently has only 2 seats in 403 member UP state assembly currently in 2026. UP voters will first the non-existing congress presence in the state. In this condition congress will heavily depend on primary BJP rival in the state which is Samajwadi Party (SP). If SP gives them sufficient seats to fight 2027 UP assembly elections, congress will survive for few more years. If SP-congress seat sharing breaks down, then congress will score a blank. Congress is demanding 150 seats from SP and the seat negotiation means both sides are talking big and refusing climb-down. In reality, congress is at the mercy of SP in UP.
