Why does Rahul Gandhi carries tags of part-time and reluctant politician?
Congress leader RaGa on his first visit to his ex-constituency Wayanad after losing the MP tag in March 2023 said that ‘MP is just a tag. It’s a position, it’s a post. The BJP can take away the tag, the position, the house, or they can put me in jail. But they cannot stop me from representing the people of Wayanad. They think that they will scare me by sending the police to my house. They think by taking away my house I will be disturbed. My sister didn't tell you but I was happy they took my house. It was not interesting for me to live in that house. How do I know what I am doing is correct? I know if the BJP is taking away my house, disqualifying me as an MP, attacking me 24 hours, I know I am doing something right. Rahul Gandhi seems to be satisfied with his work (or lack of it). The disqualification followed a conviction by the Surat court, which sentenced Gandhi with two-year imprisonment, on the accusation of defaming the Modi surname.
Then he was hit a great idea called ‘yatras’. LK Advani’s rath yatra in 1990 transformed BJP from 2 Lok Sabha seat marginal party to a national party. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi wanted something similar big impact visibility.
Unfortunately, all his yatras turned out to be political flop despite high visibility they got from the media. Just 6 months before the Bihar assembly election 2025, he undertook an extensive month long yatra across Bihar called ‘palayan roko, naukri do’ (stop migration, provide jobs) yatra. The result was an election disaster despite good response from the people. The congress and RJD INDI alliance got only 35 seats wile rival BJP and JDU sweeped the election with 202 seats. Congress got only 6 seats out of that 35 seats and this was all time low in Bihar. Almost all the places where he visited during the ‘palayan roko, naukri do’ rally, congress failed miserably.
Before Bihar, RaGa also undertook UP yatra rallies along with UP congress chief Ajay Rai. That yatra also proved to be a flop show.
Vijay Sankalp Yatra before the Haryana assembly election 2024 also flopped. Congress lost all the places were RaGa visited during this rally. So, he is often considered as BJP’s election win campaigner.
The congress leader tried ‘temple run’ for many years but that failed. Now he is trying yatra to gain visibility. This is also failing. He undetook 4000 km north-south ‘Bharat jodo yatra’ and then 6000 km east-west ‘Bharat jodo nyay yatra’ and both has minimal impact politically.

These election time rallies and doing nothing rest of the times will also made him ‘part time politician. His secret and frequent fund raising foreign trips also indicate that he is cut off from the constituency and enjoy foreign trips just like PM Nehru did. He is so non-serious that he can afford to skip Republic day 2025, Independence day, Supreme Court CJI and VP appointment events which are of national importance despite holding Leader of Opposition (LoP) rank.
