Do you agree with the argument that India should abandon dynasty for meritocracy in politics?
Almost everybody in India will agree that meritocracy in politics will work provided politicians themselves follow it, implement policies that promote meritocracy and implement it using corruption free administration and judiciary. This is a tall order for Indian politicians. Those who enjoyed fruits of corruption will try their best to retain the status quo or ‘jungle-raj’. Incompetent politicians drift towards dynasty politics and make vote appeals based emotional issues like caste, language and Gandhi surname etc.
PM PV Narasimha Rao tried to get rid of congress dynasty and develop a congress party which has merit and spine without the dynasty in early 1990s. We all know what happened to ex-PM PV Narasimha Rao during UPA era. All smaller parties are also becoming dynastic party as they see power concentration within the family is the best way to protect the family assets acquired by dubious means. Thus political corruption and dynasty politics goes hand in hand.
Dynasty politics often creates incompetent dynasts who let to the decline of the party. Akali Dal (Badal), Shiv Sena (Thackeray), Samajwadi Party (Mulayam Yadav dynasty), RJD (Laloo Yadav dynasty), JMM (Soren), TMC (Mamata Banerjee family) etc. all have incompetent dynasts who will weaken their family party. Only DMK is a dynastic party which is going strong as national parties are weak in TN and Kerala.
But as Indian economy grows, digital transactions reduce corruption, dynastic parties will become weak. Mayawati’s BSP has become so weak that Mayawati is hesitant to handover party leadership to her nephew. Many more dynastic parties will become irrelevant like BSP over the years.
Recently congress rebel leader Shashi Tharoor is speaking against the dynastic politics in congress. He is frustrated because he lost party President ship election to less capable Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress high command selected Kharge because of caste factor and because incompetent congress leaders are more loyal to the congress dynasts. In Punjab congress, relatively unknown Charanjit Singh Channi was selected considering caste factor over high profie Navjot Singh Sidhu and Capt. Amarender Singh. Senior Punjab congress leaders Capt. Amarender Singh and Sunil Jakhar (son of Balram Jakhar) has gone to BJP. Mallikarjun Kharge’s son Priyank Kharge who is IT minister of Karnataka is known mostly for anti-Hindu statements to appease the congress high command, Christian missionaries and Islamists. Priyank Kharge is not sure if he is 10th pass or 12th pass because his election affidavits keep changing his academic record. Laloo Prasad Yadav’s 7th and 9th fail sons cannot see beyond their dynastic party.
There are hundreds of cases in congress where capable and headstrong people have left the dynastic congress party even before independence. If Shashi Tharoor also leave congress and join BJP (unlikely because he comes from Kerala), Indian leftists, communists and librandµs will cry foul and start talking about the BJP’s ‘washing machine’ program instead of looking at dynasty politics and sycophancy in congress.
Shashi Tharoor may get insulted by congress high command just like PV Narasimha Rao because he is challenging congress dynasty
