What are your views on the ceasefire between India and Pakistan after a short war post Pahalgam attacks? Were India's strategic goals achieved?

The situation in Middle-East involves complex geopolitical dynamics between the US, India, Pakistan, China and Iran. It seems that USA might be interested in using Pakistan's Nur Khan Airbase due to Iran's growing nuclear capabilities and drone power. Moreover when the BrahMos missile strike on the Nur Khan Airbase suggests a significant military action by India, potentially targeting US covert operations, the US changed its tone possibly indicating a response to India's unexpected military depth inside Pakistan and growing military power in Asia. A day before the BrahMos strike on 9th May 2025, US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio said publically that USA is not getting involved in India-Pak conflict. But after the BrahMos strike on 10th May 2025, US tone changed. Not just President Donald Trump claimed credit for imposing a ceasefire between the now nuclear countries using a trade as an incentive but also Marco Rubio claimed that India attacked civilians (not terrorists) in Pakistan.

After and during the Operation Sindoor military conflict, Pakistan was given ‘Red Carpet’ treatment by USA like IMF loan, invitation of recently appointed Field Marshal Asif Munir to USA and a U.S. General has stating the need for both India and Pakistan, calling Islamabad a ‘phenomenal partner’. This indicates a complex US approach, balancing both the countries and tilting both ways as needed. Currently USA needs Pakistani bases to attack Iran if they don’t surrender their ‘nuclear options’. This is USA’s top priority now as during previous term (2016-2020) also, Donald Trump was taking strong actions against Iran.

One question that was baffling India was USA stand on somewhat pro-Pakistan stand after Nur Khan Airbase strike where USA had secretly been into covert operations (against Russia?) and USA became angry as India damaged the airbase. The reason is clear now. Pakistan airbase will be used by USA against Iran. In this condition, India will be pressurized to release Indus river waters by USA. USA is also frustrated by the success of Russian weapons BrahMos and S-400 air defence system along with loss of F-16 fighter jets on Pakistani side. The problem of USA is with Russia, China, North Korea and Iran on one side and NATO on other side. With European NATO countries not contributing 5% of their GDP to defence budget, USA is forced to spend more on Europe.

The world is indeed witnessing a shift in global power dynamics, with China and India emerging as significant players in economy, trade and investment. This shift might be causing concern for the US, which has traditionally held a dominant position. Under this circumstance, USA may be compelled to pivot towards India to contain rise of China but may need Pakistan to keep an eye on Iran and Russia.

Regarding India-Pakistan relations, India's recent actions, including the ceasefire, demonstrate a strategic approach under PM Narendra Modi's leadership. By showcasing military capabilities while exercising restraint, India aims to maintain pressure on Pakistan with a ‘no war no peace’ environment for a long period to prevent emergence of terrorism from Pakistan. The current pro-Pakistan tilt by USA is not a matter of worry for Indian leadership.
