What are some unknown cases of corruption involving the Nehru-Gandhi family?
Kailash Nath Wanchoo was born on 25th February, 1903 at Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh. After receiving his BA from Muir Central College, Allahabad in 1923, he passed into the ICS (modern day IAS) by examination in India. He then proceeded to England for the two years of ICS training, and there attended Oxford University’s Wadham College. He received no formal legal education beyond the mainly criminal law portions of the ICS training programme.
Returning to India at the age of twenty-three, his career began on 22 October 1926 when he was assigned to the then United Provinces, his first posting being as assistant magistrate and collector. In October, 1930, he was appointed officiating sessions and civil judge (by whom?) and in October 1933, he was promoted to officiating district & sessions judge. He served as District Judge of Rae Bareli during 1933 to 1936. On 17 February, 1947, at the age of forty-three, he became an acting judge of the Allahabad High Court and confirmed as permanent Judge on 12th December, 1947. He became Chief Justice of the then Part-B High Court of Rajasthan, effective 2 January 1951. After the reorganization of the states, he was reappointed as chief justice of the new Rajasthan High Court on 1 November 1956. He was sworn as Judge of Supreme Court of India on 11th August, 1958, when he was 55 years. On 12th April 1967, he was sworn in as India’s 10th Chief Justice of India.
The interesting thing is that Wanchoo had never passed any law examination in his life. He did not have any law degree. Jawaharlal Nehru directly appointed him as a judge while working in Bareilly. Then he also became the first Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court. And then under special circumstances, Indira Gandhi made him the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the country. Is this not nepotism? Why congress dynasts favoured him? There is no easy answer as some of these events happened in pre-independence era. But if someone like to link the dots – BA in Allahabad, district judge in Rae Bareli, Allahabad High Court judge means close connection with Nehru.
Wanchoo has the distinction of being the only ICS officer and the only non-lawyer to hold the highest judicial office in the land. In 1967, Hon’ble Wanchoo was awarded the LLD (honorary) from Agra University. After retirement he got plum government posts also.
