As a world leader, what are the initiatives taken by the Modi government towards Green India and climate change?

In February 2023, I boarded a small airliner plane from Jabalpur airport in Madhya Pradesh. The Jabalpur airport is fairly small and hence a new terminal building is being built for AAI (Airport Authority of India) by a contractor NKG. After the Rs 400 Crore upgrade the airport will be able to handle bigger commercial jets like 737. A 100 kW solar plant has come up on the new terminal building.

This is not a unique case. Almost all Indian airports under government AAI and private operators have plans to go solar to reduce their utility bill cost. This is part of Modi government’s SUGAM (Sustainable Green Airports Mission) and AAI is meeting about two thirds of its energy requirements through renewable energy. Solar plants with a combined commissioned capacity of 55 MWp have been installed & commissioned at AAI airports with 44 airports running on 100% Renewable Energy.

When Modi government came in 2014, only one airport ie., Cochin airport had substantial solar power generation. Later Cochin airport added hydro power investment and it got UN environment award ‘Champion of Earth’ for being a green airport.

Learning from Cochin airport success, now 44 airports in 9 years have become green airport and the list is growing.

UN honours solar-powered Kochi Airport with 'Champion of Earth' award
The Cochin International Airport (CIAL) has been honoured by United Nations with 'Champion of Earth' award for being the first airport in the world, completely powered by solar energy. CIAL has become the first airport in the world to receive the highest environmental award issued by the United Nations.

In March 2024, UP state generated more GST revenue than TN. This is indeed a remarkable achievement considering UP was always considered as ‘bimaru’ state infested with crime, lawlessness, corruption and nepotism. This March 2024 GST data may be just a flash in the pan because TN developed its industry over the last 4-5 decades and hence still way ahead of UP. TN is a powerhouse in education, both elementary and higher education like engineering and medical. TN is way ahead of UP in terms of gross state national product (GSNP). TN’s population is half than UP as it has 39 Lok Sabha seats as compared to 80 in UP. So, it is not a case to worry about. But seeing spectacular improvement in law and order in UP, business sentiment is bound to improve there.
