What is your opinion on PM Modi's “revdi culture must end” statement?

The Supreme Court on 11th August 2022 stressed on creating a balance between the welfare of the State and the economic strain on the public exchequer. "Economy losing money due to freebies and the welfare of people, both have to be balanced. That's why this debate and there must be someone to put thoughts to the vision," the CJI said. This is in reference to PIL application filed in Supreme Court, which questions Delhi government’s freebie schemes. The Supreme Court has shown a serious stand about ending the ‘Revdi Culture’ before the elections in the country. The court has said that the Election Commission and the government cannot get away from it and cannot say that they cannot do anything. The Supreme Court has asked all stakeholders, including the Centre, NITI Aayog, Finance Commission and Reserve Bank of India, to consider the issue of freebies during elections and give ‘constructive suggestion’ to deal with it.

When PM Modi raised the issue of revdi culture without naming anybody while inaugurating Bundelkhand Expressway in July 2022, same day Kejriwal appeared in video asking people to support his revdi culture. Kejriwal surely felt threatened.

Kejriwal strongly defends his freebie free politics because that is his vision to capture other states after Delhi and Punjab. Kejriwal calls those who call ‘free revdi’ the ‘traitor’ of the country. He finds no problem with free education and health schemes. In fact, basic education is free and higher education is highly subsidised since Nehru era. Similarly, health is free at government hospitals since independence. Here the problem is not freebies but the quality of education and healthcare. Due to poor quality of govt school education, primary health, govt hospitals etc. private and public institutes are booming which provide quality at a reasonable cost.

Infact, nobody blaming Kejriwal for freebies on health and education sector. Some people and economists blame him for freebies on electricity, water, bus ride, wifi internet etc. in Delhi where annual per family income is more than Rs 4 lakh and second highest per capita GDP after Goa.

States which have the highest average debt and GSDP

Punjab (53.3%)

Rajasthan (39.8%)

West Bengal (38.8%)

Kerala (38.3%)

Andhra Pradesh (37.6%)

Telangana (35.8%)

These states did not give 2.5 lakh crore rupees to the power companies due to shortage of funds and if India was not a republic, then the condition of many states here too would have been like Sri Lanka. The figures of these states show that all the money earned goes into the debt liability. In such a situation, no amount is left for development works. Those living in Delhi for more than three decades can easily compare much higher road flyover construction rate during Shiela Dixit (1998-2013) era than Kejriwal era (2015-2022). This is simply because, being a leftist govt, Kejriwal spends much more social propaganda and freebies than infrastructure development. Manish Sisodia even said flyovers are not important because only rich people use them!

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also filed an application in the Supreme Court opposing PIL against political parties promising free schemes during election campaigns. AAP party has said in its application that election promises like free water, free electricity, free transport is not free. The party has also demanded to make itself a party in the matter.

The Delhi government is unable to take proper care of the health of the citizens as seen during Covid-19 2nd wave and blamed others for shortage of oxygen. Not only this, the Delhi government is unable to finance metro rail projects. Whereas the public utility of the metro is important for environmental protection.

Free ride on transport and free electricity have been the cause of ruin for the public sector enterprise of Delhi Government i.e. Delhi Transport Corporation and Delhi Power Corporation. The accumulated loss of these corporations on the finances of the Delhi State is more than Rs 37,000 crore. But Kejriwal’s budget for freebies is increasing every day. In Delhi, it was 200 unit free electricity per month per family which increased to 300 units in Punjab, Goa, Ukh and UP election of 2022. He added Rs 1000 per month for all adult ladies in Punjab. Now he is promising unemployment allowance per person of Rs 6000 from tax payers’ money. Unemployment allowance was misused earlier in Bengal (communist era) and UP (Akhilesh Yadav era) and pocketed by party workers.

Freebies are not only damaging the civic infrastructure but also denying education and healthcare to sections of the society. Also, there is a shortage of quality teachers and doctors and related facilities on a pan India basis.
