What is the strategy of the Indian National Congress when it has brought out the issue of vote chori?
The congress strategy is simple – chor machay shor…
Jawaharlal’s father Motilal Nehru had a major role to play in Jawaharlal’s undeserved elevation. Motilal was the congress President in 1928. He desired that his position be inherited by his son. Subsequent to Patel’s Bardoli win, Motilal wrote to Gandhi on 11 July 1928 - “I am quite clear that the hero of the hour is Vallabhbhai, and the least we can do is to offer him the crown [make him President of the congress]. Failing him, I think that under all the circumstances Jawahar would be the best choice.” Motilal actively canvassed for Jawaharlal with Gandhi.

Congress party had to choose a new President in 1946 who is most likely to be the leader of Independent India. There were 15 Provincial congress committees in the country, and out of them, 12 supported Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for the top position and three abstained. Jawaharlal Nehru did not get support from any of them. Nehru refused the result and Gandhiji saved the day by ensuring Nehru becomes the congress President and subsequently PM of independent India.
