What is the problem with Indian media?

This is Indian librandµ media and political contradiction at its best -

MP Sanjay Singh of AAP getting arrested by ED for Delhi liquor excise scam in October 2023

Opposition MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira in Punjab getting arrested for drug case in September 2023

Both politicians are proudly getting arrested in front of media and waiving to the crowd as if they have won some Asian Games or Olympic medals. Few decades ago, Doordarshan media comedian Jaspal Bhatti rightly said ‘politician going to jail only enhances their political carrier’. This is true even today. This is a side effect of Gandhi-Nehru politics in India.

When AAP jailed opposition congress leader in jail for a drug case, this is not a case of political vendetta but law taking its own course. Punjab’s CM Bhagwant Mann and super-CM Arvind Kejriwal said drug menace will be strongly handled in the state. However, when its own MP Sanjay Singh is charge sheeted by ED and judiciary refuse bail considering substantial evidence against him, the same APP leader cry foul of political vendetta.

Incidentally, both AAP and congress are part of I.N.D.I. Alliance and Kejriwal said they have full commitment for I.N.D.I. Alliance. This is another example of his communist style (or Chameleon style) of working where communists say one thing and does exactly the opposite. All these daily political drama are highlighted by both print and electronic media because they generate TRP. Media can afford to highlight ongoing Asian Games which happens once in 4 years but can’t ignore daily political melodrama.

This is the reason India is poor in sports. Except Cricket, there is no money or attention for other sports. China got 201 gold medals while India got 28 (eight times less) but both have similar population size. Still it is the best Asian Games tally in last 70 years which means there is hope.

In the Olympics, we'd at best hope for something from the shooters and badminton stars and pray for hockey to bring back some glory. But here, we get India as it was meant to be. Ronaldo and Beckham from Manipur in cycling to the Mukherjee girls from Naihati in Bengal knocking out the top ranked Chinese in TT. Tajinder Toors from the Punjab, Ancy & Sreeshankar from Thrissur & Pallakad from way down South in Kerala. Athletes from royal families like Rajeswari Kumari shooting shoulder to shoulder with Manisha, a fisherman's daughter from Bhopal to bring home a medal to a MNREGA worker Ram Babu from poor village in UP getting medal. Established superstars like Neeraj and Sindhu, to unknowns like the Equestrian team who still rode their way to a gold. Jats and Jharkhandis, Mangaloreans and Gujjus, every combination of states and surnames possible. Anahat Singh, 15 a future world squash champion is out there, as is 43 year old vet Rohan Bopanna all the way up to Kiran Nadar, a 72 year old bridge star. When we look at the back pages of the newspaper, and see these names, perhaps the only time many of them will be there till the next games, it makes me feel so much better than the front page. At least in one part of the newspaper, the idea of India is definitely winning.

A MNREGA worker who won a bronze medal at the Asian Games: The fascinating story of Ram Baboo
A daily wage labourer's son from an impoverished village in Uttar Pradesh, Asian Games bronze medallist race walker Ram Baboo's journey from penury to fame is a fascinating story of a strong-willed man making his own destiny. Baboo, who won a 35km race walk mixed team bronze medal in the Asian Games along with Manju Rani, worked as a waiter to self-finance his athletics training and joined his father in road construction under MGNREGA scheme during the COVID-19 lockdown, as his family was hard-pressed.
