Why has the selling of the brand Rahul Gandhi not been a success for the Congress?

Rahul Gandhi and congress focuses on their past and present dynastic leaders rather than welfare of people. Rahul Gandhi propagates a lot of fake and half-truth stories to glorify his ancestors. One such tweet was this.

Rahul claims his late father Rajiv Gandhi brought down youth voting rights from existing 21 years to 18 years. Congress always hailed this incident as ‘revolutionary’ considering youth involvement in our country who represent the future.

The reality is quite different. Attached is news clip and links which proved that Rajiv Gandhi government in 1989 opposed lowering of voter age to 18. His government had highest 400+ Lok Sabha MP in 1985 general election following Indira Gandhi assassination. Despite this, he was nervous about 1989 election prospect due to infamous Bofors scam. His government strongly objected reducing voting to 18 years in Parliament as they found unemployed youths will prefer opposition parties. Exactly this happened in 1989 election. VP Singh raised corruption issue without proof just like Arvind Kejriwal did the same few decades later.

Rajiv Gandhi never cared about opposition leaders. He even mocked AB Vajpayee for having only 2 MP in Lok Sabha. Then why Rajiv Gandhi was forced to introduce this ‘revolutionary’ reduction of voting age to 18 bill?

It was international pressure. Many international media started mocking Indian democracy as leaders discussed pros and cons of reducing voter’s age to 18. They reported that out of 100+ democratic countries in the world, India is the only democracy which still has minimum 21 years as voting right. But the government said that the request came from its student wing NSUI and hence they acted on youth pressure and aspiration.

This explains that Indian leaders are of two types – those who care about international image or pressure and those who don’t. Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi cared for international image. Nehru generously gifted 81% of Indus river basin waters to Pakistan under Indus Water Treaty to buy peace.

Leaders like Indira Gandhi and Narendra Modi have headstrong attitude (some people call them dictators) and do not get bogged down under international pressure. Examples are Indira Gandhi resisted western pressure and gunboat diplomacy during 1971 Indo-Pak war and Modi resisted western pressure against Russia after Ukraine war.

Rahul Gandhi, like Nehru and Rajiv, lacks self-wisdom and are directed by influencers.

P.S. – I got first voting right due to this rule and hence keenly followed the debates in TV (Doordarshan) those days.

Proposal to reduce voting age fails to get support from Congress(I)
The proposal to unleash the 18-year-old vote as part of the electoral reform package did not enjoy the kind of unanimous support from the Congress(I) high command as appeared to be the case during parliamentary discussions on the subject.
