In Bangladesh, the victims of riots during their Hindu Dassera festival and the rioters who carried out the riots were both Bengalees. What happened to the Bengalee pride?

To answer this, one has to understand what constitutes a Bengalee pride and what don’t. These constitutes Bengalee pride.

1. City of Calcutta and some of its iconic landmarks like Howrah bridge, Victoria Memorial, Shaheed Minar etc. Many Bengalee homes will have photo of them as they are proud of them.

2. Darjeeling Tea

3. Politics – People of Bengal are proud of their ‘son-of-soil’ local politicians who promote ‘rebel politics’ which is leftist/communist/maoist in nature and blame federal/central/Delhi government always rather than doing welfare of the state.

4. Rossogolla and various other sweets like Sandesh, Malpoa etc. West Bengal state government can fight a bitter war with Orissa for GI tag of Rossogolla. Sitabhog and Mihidana from city Burdwan and Joynagarer Moa from Joynagar also got GI tag. Now Bengal is trying ‘Sarbhaja’ and ‘Sarpuria’ sweets of Krishnanagar to get GI tags because Bengalees are proud of their sweets. They also consider Bengal as sweetest part of India.

Looking at Rossogolla spelling, one can guess which airport is this

5. Antique hand pulled rickshaw, trams and yellow ambassador taxi of Kolkata

6. Football and Football clubs, some are more than 100 years old

7. Bengalee getting awards and rewards in international forums

8. Bengalee getting respect abroad

Tagore street in Tel Aviv, Israel

Rammohan Roy statue in Bristol, UK

Dr. Radha Binod Pal’s portrait in Tokyo shrine, Japan

8. Love for fish with at least 50 type of fish preparations using different types of fish. Lunch and dinner is incomplete without eating fish and they are proud of their fish eating habits.

9. Love art and music – everybody wish to be become a famous singer, music director, painter, music instrument artist and for that they train hard since childhood. Bengalees are proud of their artists.

10. This means Bengalees don’t have any strong proud Hindu feelings. This is same as Kerala state which has 55% Hindus, 27% Muslim and 18% Christians (2011 data) or simply 45% Abrahamic religions. In this circumstance, Hindus are forced to dilute their Hindu rituals or customs like started beef eating. Same is the case in Bengal state where in some districts, ‘peaceful community’ population crossed 50%. Anti-Hindu riots, massacre or kickout of Hindus in Bangladesh do not matter to them although many families were victim of the riots, kickout from east Bengal for last two generations and Hindu population declined from 33% (1901) to 8% (2011). So, eminent people like Jyoti Basu (hometown Narayanganj), Satyajit Ray (family belongs to Kishoreganj as his grandpa lived there), Mithun Chakraborty (birth place Barishal), Suchitra Sen (birth place Pabna), Mrinal Sen (birth place Faridpur), Aparna Sen (family from Cox’s Bazar Chittagong), Amartya Sen (his father was born in Manikganj and a professor in Dhaka University) never raised the issue of ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Bangladesh and maintained secularism. Common Hindu Bengalees are also not bothered irrespective of them living in west Bengal, other Indian states or Canada/UK/USA.
