Why does the Indian citizenship of Rahul Gandhi create such a debate in India?

Veteran BJP leader Subramanian Swamy raised British citizenship or dual citizenship issue of Rahul Gandhi. There are legal cases which are subjudice about the foreign nationality of Rahul Gandhi. But never expect this legal case or any other legal cases against him like the National Herald media related corruption, will get settled anytime soon. These cases will continue to drag for decades, thus giving advantages to both congress and BJP. Congress will get benefit of doubt, BJP will get chance to attack congress, the dynastic leaders of congress and first PM Nehru while judiciary will continue to earn money by just dragging these cases.

Congress leader RaGa uses every festivals to display his disregard for Indian cultures and roots. On every Hindu religious festivals, he and various state congress social media handlers mock Hindu festivals but they always glorify Abrahamic (Christianity & Islam) religions. Some people say this is just appeasement and core vote bank politics. But whatever be the reason, every abuse to Hindus indicate that congress party dislike Indian culture, tradition and rituals. Clearly, RaGa is accidental Hindu and accidental Indian.

This was again proved at the Republic Day 2026 reception on 26 January 2026. All guests and dignitaries were welcomed at Rashtrapati Bhavan with Assamese traditional scarf (called Gamosa) which includes foreign guests and diplomats. The foreigners may not have a problem with Indian dress or customs but congress leader RaGa has! Gamosa is a GI tagged handicraft linked with Assam.

He seems to be the only guest who refused to wear Gamosa scarf despite being told by the host, President Murmu twice. RaGa’s every action proves that he is different and not an Indian citizen. Something similar happened in July 2025 at Guwahati when he refused to wear Gamosa from congress workers.
