Why do some people view Jawaharlal Nehru as a visionary despite controversial decisions, and how does this perception compare to views on Narendra Modi?

Jawaharlal Nehu was considered as visionary despite many blunder and controversial decisions by a certain section of society because Nehru managed to build a dynastic political legacy which ultimately became most corrupt party in India. Now congress is out of power for more than a decade, it is becoming anti-India party as ex-PM AB Vajpayee said decades ago, ‘congress out of power is more dangerous for the country’.

PM Modi recently again invoked Sardar Patel’s legacy to target the congress and its first PM, Jawaharlal Nehru, accusing them of betraying Patel’s vision for a united India by allowing the partition of Kashmir. Speaking at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebrations at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat on 31st October 2025, Modi said Patel wanted to integrate Kashmir fully with India, just as he did with other princely states, but was stopped by Nehru. Nehru took charge of Kashmir and thus Kashmir was divided, given a separate Constitution and a separate flag – and the nation suffered for decades because of Nehru’s mistake.

PM Modi said Patel’s life embodied the spirit of national integration and urged citizens to renew their pledge to strengthen India’s unity and internal security. Sardar Patel believed that one should not waste time writing (read distorting) history but should work hard to create history. Patel’s leadership turned the nearly impossible task of merging more than 550 princely states into a single nation into a reality.

But why PM Modi is praising Sardar Patel who was a lifelong loyal congressman and who banned RSS after Gandhi ji assassination? This is because BJP is a nationalist party and always glorify all leaders, including historic kings, who fought against invading foreign powers and protected national interests. BJP may be new and was formed in 1980 and they do not boast having long list of freedom fighters of their own, but they can borrow true nationalists from every corner of the country and reward them. This suits BJP well especially if those politicians were dumped by rival congress who promoted a dynasty rule. BJP for their political gain target and criticise this dynasty leaders and embrace nationalistic leaders like Subhash Chandra Bose, Sardar Patel, BR Ambedkar (congress ensured his electoral defeat multiple times), PV Narsimha Rao etc.

One should remember how congress insulted their own leaders like Sitaram Kesri and PV Narsimha Rao. Congress President Sitaram Kesri was locked in the toilet of congress headoffice at New Delhi as dynastic chamchas pushed Sonia Gandhi for the party President post. Kesri’s dhoti was pulled by the dynastic chamchas as he left the office after being insulted in 1998.
