Is it true that Nehru directed the Cabinet and Dr. Rajendra Prasad to not attend Sardar Patel's funeral?
On 15 December 1950, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the Iron Man of India, died. But what happened immediately after that shows how deep political jealousy Nehru had for him. Within an hour of Patel ji's death, Nehru issued a government order. This order contained two horrifying instructions:
The government car given to Sardar Patel should be withdrawn immediately. Any Home Ministry official attending his funeral in Bombay will have to bear his own travel expenses.
India's Home Secretary V.P. Menon was shocked and disappointed, he deliberately hid Nehru's trivial order from others. He quietly arranged for all senior officials to attend Patel's funeral at their own expense. No state funeral was arranged. No national mourning. Nehru's cabinet even sent a formal request to President Dr. Rajendra Prasad, asking him not to attend Sardar Patel's funeral. Understand this - India's first President was advised not to honor the Iron Man of India at his funeral.
Dr. Rajendra Prasad, a man of his own mind, rejected the cabinet's advice and decided to go. When Nehru found out, he took C. Rajagopalachari to Bombay (now Mumbai) and gave him an ‘official condolence letter’, completely bypassing the President. When the public and congress members demanded a memorial for Sardar Patel, Nehru first opposed the idea. Later, mockingly said: ‘since Patel was a farmer leader, let us dig some wells in the villages in his memory’. That memorial plan? It was never taken up.
Another shocking development: Congress veteran Purushottam Das Tandon, who had once supported Patel over Nehru for party leadership, was later expelled from the party. It wasn't politics. It was vengeance. Sardar Patel was given ‘Bharat Ratna’, the highest civilian award, in 1991 by by PV Narsimha Rao government 41 years after his death. PM Narasimha Rao who brought economic liberalisation policy in 1991 and deviated from Nehruvian economic policy, was humiliated by congress before and after his death.
Today, when congress leaders shamelessly chant ‘Sardar Patel’, remember, they were the ones who erased his legacy, dishonoured his death and betrayed his ideals. All this because he was a leader they could never control.
Let us never forget that Patel integrated 562 princely states and gave us a united India. He warned Nehru about Kashmir, China and much more. And he paid the price for it by being silenced, side-lined and disrespected posthumously. It took 70 years and a non-congress Modi government to pay tribute to him.
