How did Jawaharlal Nehru manage to merge Hyderabad in India?

PM Nehru was not in a hurry to merge Hyderabad into India. He warned home minister Sardar Patel that any army actin in Hyderabad will cause international repercussion and will badly dent Nehru’s image of ‘messenger of peace’ in the international community. Sardar Patel smartly converted army action into a ‘police action’ called Operation Polo.

PM Nehru was aware about the Razakar brutality against the Hindu population in biggest princely state of Hyderabad but he waited partition type pogrom to happen in Hyderabad before army could be deployed. Hindu massacre in Hyderabad would have helped PM Nehru to send army there as an excuse to prevent violence. Sardar Patel didn’t wait for Hindu massacre to happen.

Nehru completely ignored anti-Hindu Calcutta August 1946 ‘Direct Action Day’ riot and subsequent Noakhali riot in eastern Bengal where victims were mainly Hindus. But the same Nehru threaten to bomb Bihar villages with fighter jet planes where anti-Muslim riots took place in response to Noakhali anti-Hindu massacres.

So, Nehru had no role in merging Hyderabad into Indian union. This incident happened during Nehru era and the complete credit for Hyderabad integration goes to home minister Sardar Patel.
