Why did the Indian National Congress name its new headquarters in Delhi as Indira Bhawan, not as Nehru Bhawan or Gandhi Bhawan?

The answer for this question was given by congress president. “Congress party’s new headquarters ‘Indira Bhawan’ has been built on the foundation of Democracy, Nationalism, Secularism, Inclusive Development and Social Justice,” congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said on social media. The previous head office at 24 Akbar Road was used by congress for last 47 years when Indira Gandhi broke away from parent congress and named her congress faction as Congress (I) where ‘I’ stands for Indira.

As the name Indira indicates, it became a complete dynastic party and they no longer need to hide it as they have done during Nehru era. This is the reason for new building name is Indira Bhavan. Indira Gandhi created more dictatorial congress. Also, PM Modi is regularly cursing Nehru for all the problems India facing today and in this situation it will be a mistake to name the new office after ex-PM Nehru. In that case BJP will again start criticising with loud mouth.

Another reason could be the need to move out from 24, Akbar Road head office as it was small and always remained congested with crowd, especially during UPA era (2004-2014). During UOA era, it was difficult to pass the road in 30-45 mins as multiple barricades slowed down traffic in that important arterial road. After 2016-2017, congress head office at Akbar Road started becoming empty and deserted by people.

This is Indira Gandhi vision of Indian democracy

In December 1973, students in an engineering college in Ahmedabad began a protest against a hike in hostel mess charges, which rapidly spread to other campuses in Gujarat and elsewhere, and attracted the support of workers, teachers, and other groups in a broad ‘Navnirman Andolan’ against economic hardships and corruption. In March 1974, student protesters in Bihar approached the socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan, who was then 72, to provide leadership to their movement. JP, who had entered self-imposed political exile after the first Lok Sabha election, had seen the youth in Gujarat force Chief Minister Chimanbhai Patel from power in February 1974, and recognised the ability of students to bring about change that would help realise his idea of a new politics distinct from the one he had wearied of.

Despite Indira Gandhi’s immense popularity after the 1971 Indo-Pak war, the economic condition was poor due to the war and refugee crisis. At a rally in Patna on June 5, 1974, JP gave his famous call for “Sampoorna Kranti” or Total Revolution, implying all-round political, economic, social, cultural, intellectual, educational, and spiritual change. When in 1975, Allahabad High Court set aside her election in 1971 on grounds of electoral malpractice, Indira responded by imposing the Emergency. This is democracy of Congress (I) for you.
