Did India's Modi make a major mistake by hosting its G20 meeting in Kashmir?

India successfully conducted a 3 day G-20 conference in May 2023 on tourism in Jammu and Kashmir despite threat of boycott from some Islamic countries. No incident reported in J&K during the event. Pakistani politicians may claim victory (hollow) but pictures speaks a thousand words.

Only China and few OIC countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey abstained officially but didn’t make any nasty comments. Many Islamic countries under OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries) pressure were expected to abstain but Indonesia attended. This is because India once boycotted Malaysian palm oil when its leader Mahatir Mohamad in UNSC blamed that ‘India invaded Kashmir’. That palm oil boycott badly impacted Malaysia economy and Indonesia current leadership is wise not to repeat that same mistake.

Chinese behavior is becoming more aggressive toward India and Indian leadership need to take on note on this. Despite partial boycott, G-20 meet is Jammu & Kashmir was fairly successful and positive feedback received from all delegates who visited the event. Indian government should be appreciated for taking a courageous decision to hold them in Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh.

The glass is half full with water if not completely full. The best part of the event is – future tourism potential has improved for international tourism in Jammu & Kashmir. What next? Modi government should shift more G-20 events to Jammu and Kashmir.
