Why was PM Jawaharlal Nehru not a visionary leader?
In 1953, DVC (Damodar Valley Corporation) acquired 41000 acres of tribal land for dam building. 1200 tribals’ lost land and livelihood. Land compensation and jobs were promised to them by Nehru government which never happened. Same is the case of lack of compensation not given to farmers whose land was acquired for Bhakra dam in HP. PM Nehru inaugurated it with lot of fanfare on October 1963 and hailed it as ‘temple of modern India’. ‘This dam has been built with the unrelenting toil of man for the benefit of mankind and therefore is worthy of worship. May you call it a Temple or a Gurdwara or a Mosque, it inspires our admiration and reverence’, Nehru said.
